Post-E3: Donkey Konga Hands-On

Post-E3: Donkey Konga Hands-On

Gibson Guitars Donkey Konga truly took me by surprise. I am a lover of games like Guitar Freaks and Dance Dance Revolution but I did not expect Donkey Konga to have that same addictiveness. In the game Donkey Konga, you select a song to play. Devo, Blink-182 and Santana are just some examples of the music licensing Nintendo has for this game. Once you have selected the song and the music starts playing, you need to bang on your bongo drum controller in time with the beats that move across your screen. Yellow circle beats mean you hit the left bongo, red means the right, purple means both left and right, and a little button with a white star like outside means to clap. The controller actually has a mini microphone in the center part of the bongo that detects if you clapped over your controller or not.

Donkey Konga is playable up to four people. If you play with four people like I did, you all then get a different drum part, not just merely the same to all bang together. I really loved this because it made you feel like your part of the song is just as important as the person next to you. It made it fun to have that unique solo or duet even that when all put together made a very interesting drum beat to the song you selected. I found myself constantly around three other guys/girls that did not want to give their bongos up.

The control is tight and accurately records your movements. So what I mean by that is, when you hit the left bongo it records it right when you hit it, unlike some games where you have to compensate slightly for the lag in the game. Playing all the music they had available with all four people, I found that Donkey Konga had no slow-down or lag at all. The controller response and the GameCube kept running at its normal and smooth pace. When you get used to the timing, you get lost in the game. You really feel like you are playing REAL drums and the music you are helping to make is REALLY yours.

Finally, there is one last thing I would like to mention about this game: EVERYONE that played it was hooked on this game from those that like games like DDR to those that dont. All were equally addicted to this fun and amazing game.
