In Our Own Backyard: Vast Assortment of Artistic Talent Presented through Terran Station

In Our Own Backyard: Vast Assortment of Artistic Talent Presented through Terran Station

Date 5/14/1998 12:00 AM | Topic: Features

Terran Station of Decorah is hosting a performing arts series, In Our Own Backyard, featuring old favorites to new experiences

. The series began April 3 and will continue through June 6, and includes a variety of artists ranging from accordian music, blues to storytelling and ethnic dance to computer art.

Storyteller Doris Kampfe performs on May 15, retelling stories heard on her grandmother's front porch. With a family history of nearly 200 years in Clayton County, Iowa, Doris brings alive the tales of the first settlers crossing the Mississippi River, accounts of Native Americans, and anecdotes of Northeast Iowans from eras past. Appearing with Doris is a four piece ensemble, 'Ol Man River Band, featuring guitar, bass, fiddle, banjo, mandolin, autoharp, and harmonica. Kampfe and the 'Ol Man River Band will perform at 8:00 p.m. at Bethania Church, Decorah.

Bo Ramsey, also part of the In Our Own Backyard series, will perform his distinctive primal roots rock sound May 22, at Terran Station. Having played in Nashville and Chicago, Ramsey has spent the past two decades "cultivating" Eastern Iowa as his place to perform music.

Ramsey, called the "biggest, most natural and dynamic rock sound this state has yet produced," could be called Iowa's combination of Dylan and Elvis, all rolled into one.

The last performers of the series, Joe Price and Radoslav Lorkovic, will perform June 6, at 8:00 p.m. Playing his guitar singing with a voice as "rough as whiskey and sweet as honey," Price has become a living Blues legend right here in Iowa. His finger picking blues will get everybody dancing.

Lorkovic is well-known for his piano/vocal and accordian music which integrate classical elegance with raw blues. Originally from Canada, Lorkovic has shared his love of boogie-piano and blues shaped around years of classical training. His performance, a crisp, clear sound, covers old blues, some originals, and songs of his Iowa contemporaries such as Joe Price, combines the fun of boogie and blues with the grace of classical.

Terran Station, founded in 1995 to provide a place for community art, performances and art shows, hopes to inspire the enjoyment of creativity in everyone, is supported through grants, donations, and volunteer work and income from activities.
