From progressive to emotional: Live music in Marty's tonight
Date 3/18/1999 12:00 AM | Topic: Arts & Culture Two names spell out musical variety at Marty's tonight: Jonathan Rundman and Beki Hemingway. These performers will be on stage at 9 p.m. ready to entertain and perform a wide assortment of music.
Jonathan Rundman
Rundman presents music with diverse and emotion- packed lyrical content delivered with everything from hard hitting electric guitar rifts to folk savoring acoustic guitar. He has been described by Richard Colligan of Songcraft magazine as "A uniquely creative songwriter and powerful performer." The songs he has written and performed are upbeat and voiced with everything from progressive change to sentimental feeling in mind.
Not only do Rundman's songs feature variety, his areas of performance are also more than well rounded. He has played in everything from clubs to churches, coffeehouses to conventions, universities to maximum-security German prisons, music festivals from Northern Michigan to the Czechoslovakian border, and now in a small town called Decorah at a place called Luther College.
Coming to Luther, however, will not be a foreign affair for Rundman. He was a non-traditional student here in 1991.
"I really enjoyed my time at Luther. During my time at Luther I think I started becoming a serious song writer," Rundman said.
Beki Hemingway
Hemingway will add to the evening with a definite alternative feel and songs ranging everywhere from hard hitting to emotionally touching.
"I believe most of my songs stem from relationships with people," said Hemingway.
Performing in over 100 shows in the past year, Hemingway sings with energy and a voice which is crystal, yet sultry, in quality. She has been described in the Illinois Daily Herald as a woman who is "not your typical female rock singer of the '90s."
This will be Hemingway's first visit to Luther and should be a pleasurable one for the audience in Marty's tonight.
CD Releases
Both artists have produced CDs. A strong variety of music can be found in Rundman's CD Recital under the Salt Lady Records label.
Hemingway's voice and hard hitting music can be found on her most recent CD rinse. repeat. distributed by Birdie Num-Num Songs and will soon be releasing an upcoming CD entitled Vent.
With music of this quality and variety there might be some Luther road trips to Wisconsin. Rundman and Hemingway will be continuing their midwest tour with a free performance tomorrow night Friday, March 19, at 9 p.m. in the Barnes and Noble Cafe in La Crosse.
